"The Hound of the Baskervilles" (in the English original - The Hound of the Baskervilles) - a story by Arthur Conan Doyle, describing the adventures of the most famous detective of all time and his assistant. The first publication of the work is dated August 1901. It appeared in installments in the monthly Strand Magazine. "The Hound of the Baskervilles" is notable for one more thing. She became a kind of revival of a character beloved by readers after his possible death in a fight with the leader of the underworld of London, Professor Moriarty. The Hound of the Baskervilles was highly acclaimed by Conan Doyle fans: the book ensured the success of subsequent stories about the Baker Street detective.

According to the plot, Sherlock Holmes will have to investigate the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville. James Mortimer, who is a doctor in the Devonshire branch, comes to the apartment at 221-B Baker Street. He is concerned about the unexpected death of one of his patients. The body of Sir Charles Baskerville was discovered in the park of his own estate. Despite the fact that everything spoke of a natural death caused by a progressive heart disease, Dr.what alerted me, namely the giant dog footprints near the lifeless body. The deceased himself was deeply convinced that there was a Hound of the Baskervilles - a creature of mystical origin that had haunted his family for several centuries. Sir Charles's opinion was shared by farmers from nearby lands, according to whom they themselves had often seen a dog burning with hellish light at night in the swamps.

Intrigued by the mystery, Holmes takes control of the case. The very next day he meets with the offspring of the deceased, Sir Henry. The new owner of the enchanted estate is on edge: he received an anonymous letter with threats and advice to stay away from the family nest. Nervously, Henry begins to drink heavily and believe deeply in the family tradition. Sherlock discovers a young baronet is being secretly followed in London.

Contrary to his custom, the detective refuses to personally visit the scene of the murder and delegates all authority to Dr. Watson, who is instructed to accompany Sir Henry everywhere and report on the situation regarding letters.

During the investigation, it is possible to establish that the Hound of the Baskervilles is nothing but a hoax behind the authorship of a neighbor Jack Stapleton, who is actually the nephew of the deceased baronet. Stapleton, having settled nearby under an assumed name, managed to ingratiate himself with the Baskervilles in order to take possession of the estate. At one time, having learned from the lips of the deceased himself a family legend and remembering the weak heart of Sir Charles, Jack turns into lifeyour cunning plan. Having bought a huge black dog, Stapleton smears it with a special luminous compound and secretly delivers the dog at night to Baskerville Hall.

The cause of the poor baronet's death was also established. Stapleton's calculation turned out to be correct: seeing the "hellish creature" in front of him, Charles Baskerville started to run, but because of the strongest fear and stress, the elderly gentleman's heart could not stand it. The same evil genius tried to turn against Henry, but Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes prevented the implementation of the insidious plan. The Hound of the Baskervilles turned out to be an unusually large cross between a bloodhound and a black mastiff, heavily rubbed with phosphorus. Trying to escape from the police chase, Stapleton drowns in the Devonshire swamps. Holmes tries to save the life of the criminal, but fails.
